The Prophecy of Gog and Magog

We have prepared a compilation of excerpts from the writings of Mr. Bliss Knapp, CSB, regarding Bible prophecy and the battle of Armageddon.  Mr. Knapp tells us in his book, The Destiny of The Mother Church (pg. 230), that there is a Bible prophecy “which remains to be fulfilled.”  It relates to a letter written by Mary Baker Eddy which was published in The First Church of Christ, Scientist and Miscellany.  In this prophetic letter to a branch church in London, she wrote:

Pale, sinful sense, at work to lift itself on crumbling thrones of justice by pulling down its benefactors, will tumble from this scheme into the bottomless abyss of self-damnation, there to relinquish its league with evil.  Wide yawns the gap between this course and Christian Science.

God spare this plunge, lessen its depths, save sinners and fit their being to recover its connection with its divine Principle, Love.  For this I shall continue to pray.

Satan is unchained only for a season, as the Revelator foresaw, and love and good will to man, sweeter than a sceptre, are enthroned now and forever  (My. 200:9-7).

—Mary Baker Eddy

Mr. Knapp explained the meaning of this letter several times in his book, addresses and letters.  In one address in 1949 he told his students:

There is no awakening from this experiment with socialism until it tumbles into the “bottomless pit of self-damnation.”  Not until then will it “relinquish its league with evil”

In another address (1951) he explained to his students the meaning of Gog and Magog:

We learn from the book of Revelation that Gog initiates the battle against the saints, and against the beloved city. The nations of the West are leading their people to believe that man’s wisdom can prevent a war. But “when there is no vision, the people perish.” It takes people of vision to read the signs of the times correctly, and learn as we are told in Revelation that another war cannot be avoided; it is inevitable. Even its field of action is not left to the imagination; it must be in Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya. The first World War evidently took care of Ethiopia and Libya, but there remains Persia [Iran], or what we know as the Middle East….

“The Remnant” – An Address by a Student

This address, by Mrs. Annie P. Eagle, a Christian Science practitioner and student of Bliss Knapp, CSB, was presented to his association in the early ’70′s.  In it she writes,

One of the signs of our times is the comparatively small attendance at our churches and Sunday Schools and the lectures.  That this is one of the signs we know, because Jesus foretold that, “the love of many [would] wax cold” (Mt. 24:12), and Paul said that there would “come a falling away” (II Thess. 2:3).

What is the answer?  A study of Bible history shows us that it has required only a remnant, that is, a small number which remain loyal and steadfast, to keep aglow the Christ-light and to maintain the chain of its appearing.

From one ancient unknown family, that of Abraham, came all the chosen people.  Later, twelve tribes of former slaves went out from mighty Egypt and re-established their land.  The holy land itself was the smallest of the ancient countries, having approximately one-sixth the size of Florida.  Yet there in the midst of great and powerful nations was nourished the worship of one God, Spirit.

When Elijah had to flee for his life, he cried out in despair, “I, even I only, am left” (I Kings 19:10). But God told him, “Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed to Baal” (I Kings 19:18). The remnant was there, and Elijah returned to lead them.

The 20th anniversary of the publication of The Destiny of The Mother Church

It was on September 16, 1991, in which the Bliss Knapp book, The Destiny of The Mother Church, was released for sale by the Christian Science Publishing Society.  It is still available today through the Publishing Society and many Christian Science Reading Rooms.

The following is a paper written by a Bliss Knapp student and given in the early 1990′s to his Association:

In April 1991, The Christian Science Board of Directors and the Trustees of The Christian Science Publishing Society made the decision to publish The Destiny of The Mother Church by Bliss Knapp. When The Destiny reached the Reading Rooms, it brought out into the open a division of teaching which erupted early this century. The division concerns the identity of Mary Baker Eddy, –as either Mark Baker’s daughter, the one who eventually became the Discoverer, Founder and Leader of Christian Science; or, the Woman who fulfilled Bible prophecy as found in Isaiah, Ezekiel, Micah and Revelation, –the Messenger who brought the divine Comforter and established God’s church.

Mrs. Eddy’s devoted students accepted her as the God-crowned woman of Scriptural prophecy. This is clearly shown in their writings in the early Christian Science periodicals. The members of the Knapp family were among this group.

There is a golden chain of events showing, in our Leader’s words, “…God’s disposal of events” in regard to Mrs. Eddy’s unique friendship with the Knapp Family, and Bliss Knapp in particular. In the following pages, a number of interesting vignettes are related concerning Mrs. Eddy’s association with her student, Bliss Knapp. Like the vignettes in the We Knew Mary Baker Eddy series, these accounts are helpful in understanding Bliss Knapp, –the man, his book, and our Leader. The compiler of this information is a student of Mr. Knapp.
